I have been thinking about marriage lately. No, I am not dating or even considering marriage but what if I was at my age? My roommate and friend just recently got engaged to her high school sweetheart and they have been together around 7 years. Of course everyone is ecstatic for this companionship, but is 19 years old too young?
Back in the day it was considered normal to get married around this age, but it is still a considered a big deal in today’s culture. The ideal age to get married has been shifted from right out of high school to middle to late twenties. I could go into detail about women’s rights, the work force and how it has contributed to this change in view, but I am not trying to teach a history lesson.
There are many different aspects that need to be looked at when getting married, which is a well known fact among those in college. I always get frustrated when people think that there is a fixed way to live our lives. Every person is unique in their own way and if that person wants to get married then why not?
Yes, we are still in college, and we haven’t gotten a job yet, but that is not the point of marriage. Marriage doesn’t mean that you immediately have to find a house and conceive children. It is meant for two people who are truly in love and want to commit to that love for the rest of their lives.
